Dictionary of Modern Icelandic is a new online dictionary built at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies in Reykjavík.
Please note that the work is still in progress and some definitions may not be complete.
This work was initiated in 2013. It is based on the multilingual dictionary ISLEX which is also published by the Árni Magnússon Institute. The vocabulary of the dictionary is around 50,000 lemmas but new words and definitions are constantly being added and revised. Each entry has a link to a sound file with the word's pronunciation, and the entry for all inflected words contains a link to the Database of Icelandic Inflections. In many cases, illustrations exemplify the meaning and use of individual words.
The dictionary is meant to cover Icelandic vocabulary from 1950 onwards. However, it also contains a number of important words from older stages of the language which students are likely to come across in their studies.
The editors of the dictionary are Halldóra Jónsdóttir and Þórdís Úlfarsdóttir.
